Book Project Proposal

Due: in workshop, 18 October

Task: bring written answers to the following questions:

-What is your definition of a book? Must it have type, images, covers, and paper pages? Before you make it you need to clarify what sort of book it will be, how it will be used, and who will use it. This will help to choose the appropriate design and binding technique.

- What is the book’s purpose? Will the book hold a written story( poem, short story, are your writing the text?), images, or both?

- How much text is there? How will you divide it among the pages? What typeface will you use? How large do you want the type? Do you have access to word processing software and a printer? Are you type setting using traditional Typography methods?

- Do you want any illustrations to go with your text? If so, will they be drawings (pencil, pen and ink, other), watercolors, prints, collages, photographs, mix media? Will they be in black and white or color?

- What shape will the book have? Rectangular ? Structural? Will it have a horizontal or vertical format?

- Will the book be made from paper, wood, plastic, glass, metal, found objects, other... ?

- Will the book be a wall piece, floor piece, hanged from the sealing, other presentation issues...

- How many pages are needed? Will they be divided into chapters or sections?

- What size will the book be?

- Will the book have a hard cover, a box or case?

- What colors for the cover and the text will best suit the message?

- What kind of paper or other material is right for the cover and the text pages? Textured, smooth, lined, dark, light, opaque, translucent, handmade, other...

- Will the book be a single copy, or an edition of books that are all the same?
