Some groups of people in the South Asian region seem to have embraced the Internet with an overwhelming passion. The number of sites based in the sub-continent has increased exponentially in the past two decades, and although the quality of these sites varies, the range gives us a sense of the multiplicity of voices that coexist in the region. While any search engine on the web can give you access to these sites, some that I frequent are:
News and Current Affairs
The Times of India: www.timesofindia.com
Economic and Political Weekly: http://www.epw.org.in/
Doordarshan (India's official television station): www.ddindia.com
IBN-LIVE, for real-time streaming news: www.ibnlive.com

A major cable TV news network in India is NDTV, at:
www.ndtv.com
Another is Zee TV (a popular cable television station): www.zeetelevision.com
One of the most exciting sites that brings together a range of perspectives on South Asia, based in Bangladesh, is called Alternative Asian Voices: www.shobak.org/
For news coverage on issues pertaining to South Asians in the US, or how the American media deals with South Asian news, see South Asian Journalists Association: www.saja.org
A site focusing on South Asian women's issues is hosted by SAWNET (South Asian Women's NETwork) at: www.umiacs.umd.edu/users/sawweb/sawnet/index.html
An excellent women's studies journal is Manushi: A Journal About Women and Society, at www.indiatogether.org/manushi/

For a site that looks at cultural and historical matters in a non-academic, accessible style, see the "Manas" website at: www.sscnet.ucla.edu/southasia/index.html . A number of links on this site give introductions to various aspects of South Asian history.
"Sarai": South Asia Resources from Columbia University can be accessed at: www.columbia.edu/cu/libraries/indiv/area/sarai/
An interesting site that concentrates on historical matters is the "Harappa" website at: http://www.harappa.com/welcome.html
Music and Entertainment
The Indian film industry (also known, rather pejoratively, as Bollywood) is among the most prolific in the world, and generates a wide variety of publications. Most of the mainstream "filmi" magazines are available on the web. The best known magazines are:
Bollywood Online: www.bollywoodonline.com/
