On the basis of fieldwork in Lima between 1989 and 1991, this thesis analyzes both the scissors dance and the dance of "negritos," to argue that Lucanino migrants (from Ayacucho) balance many apparently contradictory notions of Andean and Catholic religious systems through a parallel balance between spiritual and commercial interests.
One chapter of the thesis was published in an edited volume in 1993 under the title, "El baile de los negritos y la danza de las tijeras: Un manejo de contradicciones [The Dance of the "Negritos" and the Scissors Dance: A Management of Contradictions]," In Música, danzas, y máscaras en los Andes.
