Guidelines for
finishing Division I (from your
advisor) J
To
complete Division I you will need to present a portfolio of the work you did
during the first year to show progress you've made in each of the seven Division
I goals.
Your advisor will then write your overall Division I evaluation using
excerpts from your course evaluations on The Hub and guided by material you
present in your portfolio.
Start
to construct your portfolio this spring before what you did last fall is a
faint memory. Then over the summer
when you receive your spring course evaluations you can just bring it up to date
and write your reflective essay.
Please
make an appointment with your advisor before spring break and bring a
beginning version of your portfolio.
Right
after spring break, sign up for a time to start
conversations about what you might do in Division II.
NOW Just follow these simple
steps
Get
a 3 ring binder—a 1 ½ - 2 inch deep size (sometimes I have some
empty ones, so ask if you would like one of those).
- Put dividers in it with the following labels:
- Table of Contents
- Reflective self-evaluation (you'll write it last—over the summer
or first thing next fall).
See below for more about the self evaluation below.
- Copies of all course or independent study evaluations or grades you
have received so far (include course #'s).
- A list of courses/independent studies you have completed (indicate
which courses satisfy the 5 school requirements).
- One section for each of the Division I goals
- Learn
to read and interpret intellectual or artistic works
- Write
critically and analytically
- Understand
quantitative methods of analysis
- Develop
creative abilities in expressive modes (e.g. creative writing, visual
and performance arts, and music)
- Effectively
present ideas orally
- Conceive
and complete project-based work
- Understand
multiple cultural perspectives on intellectual or artistic subjects
Into
each of those seven sections, put examples of work that demonstrate your
progress in each of those goals: papers you wrote (with faculty comments),
print out of notes or Power Points you used for presentations, photos or
explanations of creative or expressive work (or show us a portfolio of artistic
work separately) and any other material that will demonstrate how you satisfied
each of those goals.
NEXT FALL (OR OVER THE
SUMMER) write your reflective self evaluation
After
you have completed everything except the self-evaluation, sit down and read
through your entire portfolio (as we will do). Keep notes.
Then make a list of the 7 goals, and after each one, indicate your
assessment of the progress you've made in skills, confidence, knowledge,
performance, or competence in each and point out what evidence we should look
for in the portfolio to support what you have said.
Point
out also where you believe you still need to improve (this won't keep you from
passing Division I; in fact, showing that you know what you still need to learn
is good evidence that you're ready for Division II).
If
you still have work to complete to satisfy any goals, write something that says
that and that explains how you will fulfill them fall semester.
That's
all there is to it! It will
provide your advisor with insights about your progress, and you will gain some
insights into your own learning.
