Response to reading the primary article assigned in class
Now
that you are familiar with the language used in this paper,
we'd like you to read it again slowly paying attention to
how the paper is organized and what the scientists are saying.
We've
provided you with questions to guide your discussion and
explain what we expect of you.
What we do NOT expect is that you will do this perfectly
or understand how exactly to answer each question. Some
of the questions are pretty straight forward, others are
a bit more complex. We'd like you to give each a serious
try.
Writing about scientific papers builds important intellectual
skills and engagement with science.
The purpose of this assignment is to see how well you do
now after a semester of learning. Do the best job you can
answering all questions.
Answer each of the questions
below and explain your answers. Make sure your
readers will be able to see what you do and do not
understand about this piece of primary literature.
- What question is addressed by
this research? Explain why this can be considered
an important question (either your own ideas and/or
the authors).
- What hypothesis was investigated
in this study? Explain how it is related to the
question discussed in #1 above.
- How was the study set up? Explain
why it was set up this way.
- What data were collected? Explain
why they were collected.
- What were the results? Explain
how well they do (or do not) support the hypothesis.
- Explain any alternative explanations
for the findings (either your own ideas and/or the
authors).
- What further research does this
study suggest (to you and/or the author)? Explain
why it should be conducted.
