DIVISION I LEARNING GOALS

To complete Division I at Hampshire College you will need to demonstrate at the end of this year that you have satisfied the seven Division I learning goals. This means you will put together a portfolio of work you have done that demonstrates your progress in achieving these goals.

Assignments in the Human Biology class will help you make progress towards satisfying five and possibly six (depending on your choice of final project) of those learning goals.

The chart below summarizes the seven goals and how your work in Human Biology is designed to help you build skills in some of these areas. In the beginning of the semester you may think you don't know how to do all those things or even what some of them mean. That's as it should be. The course is structured to teach you how to do those things, and if you complete all the assignments in a thoughtful timely way, you will make excellent progress in those areas.

Learn to read and interpret intellectual or artistic works	* Find and read primary research articles in science * Use medical texts in class and the library to help solve cases * Complete assigned work in the text
Write critically and analytically	* Write and revise critical analyses of primary research articles. * Write carefully constructed and argued case reports and short assignments leading to those reports * Write a final paper that demonstrates an understanding of how to write critically and analytically.
Understand quantitative methods of analysis	* Write analytically about graphs and charts you find in primary articles and medical texts * Complete assignments about statistics
Develop creative abilities in expressive modes (e.g. creative writing, visual and performance arts, and music)	* Not built into the Human Biology course
Effectively present ideas orally	* Share information and be an active listener on your case solving teams. * Give a presentation at the end of the term about some aspect of your final paper topic.
Conceive and complete project-based work	* Carry out your roles well on the case solving teams. * Propose, pursue, and write about a topic (final paper).
Understand multiple cultural perspectives on intellectual or artistic subjects	*Not built into the Human Biology course, but some topics you may pursue as part of your final paper may help you show progress towards this goal.
