Student Research Opportunities
For Students interested in learning how to conduct field research in Animal Behavior:
This page [in progress!] will list field research opportunities on and around the Hampshire Campus. Most of these research projects are being conducted by Div III Hampshire students working on their senior theses, although students at other 5-college campuses, and faculty, may occasionally list projects as well. If you have a project that needs assistants, please email me your information and I will post it here (email: partan"at"hampshire.edu). If you want to be a field assistant, please check back regularly, as I will post opportunities as they become available.
FIELD ASSISTANT OPPORTUNITIES:
•From Dana Morrison: I am a DIV III student majoring in animal behavior and ecology. During the final spring semester of my DIV II I conducted population estimations using line transects for kudu, steenbok, duiker and wildebeest on a Game Farm in the Central Kalahari, Botswana Africa. Using this research as a basis for my DIV III I am now conducting a population/ relative distribution survey of moose and white tailed deer in the Cadwell Memorial Forest. The project is still in the works but should be up and running soon. The data collection process is fairly simple. Walk a line and note the distance of any dung (white-tailed or moose) from your line. Transects are going to be 200- 500 meters long. We will also keep note of any live animals seen. There may also be a few times when we back track, which is when you find a set of tracks and follow it as far as you can, seeing where the animal has been and such… very fun. This project will require hiking through the woods, in what will most likely be bad weather, so be prepared for some real live research experience. Actual data collection will, most likely, not start till late October early November and go on till late February. You do not need to commit to the full length of the project, just getting people to help out when they can is great! If you are interested in helping out, please let me know. You can contact me at dem06@hampshire.edu.
