As designers and writers, thinkers and architects, it is central to our practice and study to express our ideas––AND do so clearly, beautifully and effectively. From writing to photography to architectural diagramming, there are many facets to the architectural expression. Both the design process and writing require similar methods of critique and production as pieces are assembled and designed. In this process, we are thinkers, artists, photographers, curators, marketers, poets, philanthropists and philosophers. In this course, we will explore components of each of these roles and actions.
Learn. We will first explore the language of expression in books and journals through reading, looking, dissecting, and critiquing. We will hope to gain insight into the various components of the pieces, along with an idea of their various methods and approaches to writing, documentation, representation and publishing. We will then delve into the language and style of architectural philosophies, looking specifically at Treatises and Manifestos - Vitruvius, Alberti, Taut, Gropius, and others. In following we will unpack the contents of the "Architect's Book" through reading, critique and discussion with guest speakers on their own book design and publishing process. Various trips to the library and rare book rooms will shed light on the many aspects that surround the architectural journal.
Explore. The second major component of this process is to dive quickly and creatively into a process of making. In just a couple short days, we will dump a vast skillset onto the students for them to adopt, parse, explore, and hone. We will be introduced to Raster and Vector Art and their roles in printing, publication and digital media. A key component of this phase will be producing a article layout mockup. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator will be central to study and invent various modes of architectural representation. In following, the language of online publication will be discussed and introduced through various processes, mainly through the study of Adobe (Macromedia) Dreamweaver. We will explore various models for online publishing and analyze site structure and menu components for future applictation. A mock-up of our print article layout will be converted to an online piece.
Produce. The capstone to this course is the publishing of an online architectural journal. In this process students will identify a collective topic or agenda for the publication and then organize themselves into a team for this design process. Everything from photography, diagrammatic analysis, textual documentation, layout and publication will be delegated and, as a collective, we will produce a final piece to be linked to the 5College Architectural Studies Website.
