yatra
An Indian Journey

The first group of students to visit India as a part of Hampshire College's January Term in India, Yatra: An Indian Journey, returned on January 26th, 2001. This program took students to three different parts of India--New Delhi, Jaipur, and Udaipur--as part of an academic enquiry into the predicaments of the postcolonial state. The course was an intense experience that brought students into contact with academics, artists, and activists working on a wide range of issues. Along the way, we also had a lot of fun! The following images were taken randomly at various moments of the trip. Enjoy!

Most of our classes were conducted outdoors, in the glorious winter sunshine.

We travelled by bus most of the time, and some of the best conversations of yatra took place in transit.

The bus also made it possible for us to stop randomly, to explore the countryside, and perhaps best of all--to sip chai at strategically located "dhabas" (roadside stops).

When not in class or on the bus, a great deal of time was spent visiting the city, in streets, and bazaars...
