Research Interests and Publications

Helaine’s academic interests concern different ways of doing medicine and science. She is the editor of the Encyclopaedia of the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Non-Western Cultures (Kluwer, 1997). The encyclopedia, a collection of almost 600 articles by almost 300 contributors, covers a range of topics from Aztec science and Chinese medicine to Tibetan astronomy and Indian ethnobotany. She is also at work on a new series called Science Across Cultures. In it, the breadth of the encyclopedia is complemented by books that explore the topics in greater depth. The first two books, Astronomy Across Cultures and Mathematics Across Cultures, were published in 2000. Medicine Across Cultures and Nature Across Cultures are in press and should be out in 2003.

In addition to the publications on science, Helaine has several articles on various aspects of being a librarian at Hampshire.
