Mies
van der
Rohe was a
man of few, yet
insightful words.  Like
his words, his buildings are
timeless and are an example of
the profoundness of simplicity.  Although
Mies had simplicity in mind, the designs of
modernist architects tend to be built for the purpose
of housing for the wealthy upper class or for six-figure
office space.  The idea behind erecting a building that is trans-
parent and so visually open, whether intended for public use or not,
would appear to be to make spaces available and beneficial to everyone.
However, in actuality, they create a divide in society and force the humble to
dense, brick, urban dwellings.  Hopefully the future will bring a change in our economy
and consequently revolutionize the interpretation of the age-old adage, “people who live in
glass houses shouldn’t throw stones,” and make it not quite so transparent.
