No Film Screening this week. We will begin with small group work and a discussion of Helena Maria Viramontes's short story "The Cariboo Cafe." Please re-read the story and be prepared to talk about the ways in which Viramontes connects and interrelates the three characters' lives and perspectives. We will then continue with a discussion of your visual narratives or images on the themes of home, exile, and migration. You should be able to speak about your selection of images and critical or personal perspective. Please read Edward Said's "Reflections on Exile" as well as the chapters from Iain Chambers's book as inspirations and provocations. Reminders: Those of
you who have not given me your student information sheets with phone numbers
and For those of you who missed the screening of El Norte, the video can be viewed at Amherst College Audio-Visual Reserve at individual viewing stations. El Norteis also available at Video to Go in Amherst and Pleasant Street Video in Northampton.
