HUMAN BIOLOGY COURSE REQUIREMENTS

At the end of the semester, we will write an evaluation for your Central Records file that addresses all aspects of your work and emphasizes how your work has moved you towards completing Division I requirements in Natural Science.

A sample evaluation is included here to give you an idea of the kinds of things we mention (for a student who completed all the work). The beginning describes the course; the rest talks about the student's work.

In order to receive an evaluation, you need to complete all the work outlined below and submit a portfolio and self evaluation at the end of the semester. Details about what goes into that portfolio and evaluation are given below and will be described more in class.

Requirements for Evaluation

  • Regular attendence, arrival to class on time, and full participation in class are critical to your success in this class and that of your team mates. If you need to miss class for medical or emergency reasons, contact us by e mail or phone before class if possible (or as soon after your absence as possible). THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT.
  • Completion of all written assignments.

Except for case log entries and in-class reflections, all written work must be done on a word processor

Late work will not be accepted except in special circumstances (check with us). This rule is to protect you and your team. The point of handing in homework on time is so that we can help you improve your skills and knowledge throughout the semester. If you hand in everything late, you lose the opportunity to learn from our comments on your work and therefore miss out on the most important reason for taking the course.

The following written work will be turned in:

Research notes. Copies of the information you prepare to present to your teams for each class.

Case Reports. At the conclusion of each team case and team research paper analysis, you will each hand in a report. Guidelines for writing case reports and research article reports are included in this packet.

Summaries and revisions. On alternate weeks you will prepare summaries of articles you find about human biology.

Study questions. Questions based on text material related to the cases will be assigned on a regular basis.

Case logs You will keep records of the work you and your team do on the cases throughout the semester.

Problem sets. Occasional problems will be assigned to help you understand some of the readings.

Final paper. Assignments to help you complete your final paper will begin half way through the semester.

  • Portfolios that include all the written work you've completed will be due at mid semester and at the end of the semester. Be sure to save all work that is turned back to you so you can submit it in your portfolio.
