April 4

This week we will discuss Gurinder Chadha's Bhaji on the Beach which presents a female and feminist perspective of the South Asian immigrant experience in Great Britain.

Please complete the following supplemental readings:

  • Avtar Brah, "Gendered Spaces: Women of South Asian Descent in 1980s Britain" (in Cartographies of Diaspora)
  • Andrea Stuart, "Blackpool Illuminations"
  • Bharati Mukherjee, "The Tenant" (short story) and
    "A Four-Hundred-Year-Old Woman" (essay)

In-class screening of Gurinder Chadha's I'M BRITISH BUT...

This week we will do small group discussions that will be centered around your own questions and comments on the film and readings.
